Trying to live for God is not the new covenant. Jesus comes into the believer to be the life God is pleased with.
Thus trying sets one up to fail because you are putting yourself under the old covenant instead of remaining in grace.
No one is pleasing to God who tries to keep the Law. To do so is to backslide away from Jesus.
